On 17-05-2017 the Irish Seal Sanctuary( ISS) sent a landing party to the Island, declaring intention to pursue course for adverse possession following exhaustive and unsuccessful attempts over a number of years to contact owner.

The intention is to manage, protect and secure the Island for wildlife in perpetuity. It is a designated Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and a Special Protected area (SPA) and listed as such under Natura 2000 legislation by the Irish Government.

The ISS first conducted a seal count on the island in 1984 as Skerries Marine Watch, with help from Skerries Sea Scouts and continued over years to visit and give witness to seals and wildlife presence and use. Thanks to local interest and support the seals continue to breed on the Island.

The Irish Seal Sanctuary now wishes to give this added layer of protection, through adverse possession.
